Lessons from the best people I’ve worked with

Jing: how to take care of people

  • Figure out what their hopes and goals are; then help them achieve those
    • Within Google framework: getting promo fast
    • Then: Trying out full-stack dev because I wanted to, from day 1
  • Loyalty
    • Chewed out frontend team after specs changed. She turned to me and said “What. The. F***” when she heard about it. Very mama bear.
  • Morale
    • Threw a surprise birthday party for Angie with the whole team
    • Coworker: “You always have a smile for me”
  • Responsibility
    • When Hangouts Chat frontend was melting down, if it happens on stage. “If they don’t fire me, I have to resign”. Very frank.

Thiago

  • Pay attention to the details
    • Wrote up an extensive nitpick through how the design of Streamlit layouts should work. Then when Notion ate it… wrote it up again
  • Good process
    • Take notes on Notion!
    • 1:1 meeting docs
  • DM people with feedback
    • Happened to me live during demos after a hackathon. It’s extremely rewarding to know that people are paying attention to what you’re doing

James

  • Believe in yourself
    • Launching Manifold love, pulling the team together, bullheadedness with play money. Contrarianism, libertarianism
  • Work hard

Stephen

  • Don’t do dumb things
    • Not doing cashouts when I wanted to was probably good, if it looked blatantly illegal
    • Paranoia during FTX crisis was very good (got Manifold’s money out of there)

Ian

  • You can just do things! Ship fast.
  • Care about your users.

Rachel

  • Aesthetics matter
    • OpenBook, The Curve/Manifest, Scheduling App
  • Following rules is consideration to others
  • There’s more to life than the internet
